Finding Supplement Distributors in Canada: NHP Brand Guide

Canada classifies most supplements as Natural Health Products (NHPs), regulated by Health Canada. Getting an NPN (Natural Product Number) is mandatory before any Canadian distributor will list your product. Understanding this regulatory prerequisite — and how distributors can help you navigate it — is the first step to building a successful Canadian supplement business.

NPN: the Canadian market entry prerequisite

Every natural health product sold in Canada must have a Natural Product Number (NPN) or a DIN-HM (Drug Identification Number for Homeopathic Medicines). NPN applications are submitted through Health Canada's Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD). Application review time varies from 60 days (Class I, low-risk products) to 300+ days (Class III, higher-risk). Most supplement categories fall into Class I or II.

Canadian distributors will not invest in your product until your NPN is in hand or at minimum in active review with a realistic approval timeline.

  • Loblaws / Real Canadian Superstore / Zehrs: Major grocery retailer with growing natural health section.
  • Whole Foods Canada: Premium natural and organic — requires all products to meet Whole Foods ingredient quality standards.
  • Popeye's Supplements: Canada's largest sports nutrition specialty retailer with over 140 stores.
  • GNC Canada: Significant presence for sports nutrition and mainstream supplements.
  • Nature's Emporium / Goodness Me: Ontario-based premium health food chains for natural supplement brands.

Bilingual labelling: the non-negotiable

All Canadian product labels must be bilingual — English and French — under the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act and Health Canada's NHP Regulations. This applies to all label elements: product name, directions for use, claims, ingredient list, warnings, and company information. Translation must be accurate; machine-translated labels are frequently flagged by Health Canada during NPN review.

Margin expectations and direct-to-consumer option

Standard Canadian channel margin structure: Brand → Distributor (~40–50% off RRP) → Retailer (~35–45% off RRP). This means your product needs ~70% gross margin at transfer price to work economically in Canadian retail.

Many international supplement brands start with Canadian DTC/e-commerce (direct shipping or Amazon.ca) to build sales history before approaching distributors. Amazon.ca requires NPN on the listing for NHP products — ASIN suppression is common without it.
