Finding Supplement Distributors in the UAE: A Brand Guide

The UAE is the gateway to the wider Gulf supplement market and one of the fastest-growing supplement markets in the world. Expatriate populations, high disposable income, and strong health and fitness culture drive demand. But every supplement sold in the UAE requires Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) product registration — a process that your local distributor must lead.

MOHAP product registration: mandatory before sale

All health supplements in the UAE must be registered with MOHAP via the Food Control Department before being placed on the market. The registration process involves: product details, full ingredient declaration, Certificate of Free Sale from the country of origin (apostilled), manufacturing facility Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certificate, product label (English and Arabic), and a sample for testing. Registration takes 3–6 months and costs approximately AED 5,000–15,000 per product.

Your UAE distributor will typically manage this process on your behalf, which is one reason the distributor relationship must be established before product registration begins.

Halal certification

Halal certification is not legally mandatory for supplements in the UAE, but it is commercially critical. Major UAE retailers (including pharmacies and hypermarkets) strongly prefer or require Halal-certified products. Ingredients derived from pigs (gelatin capsule shells being the most common issue), alcohol-based flavours, and non-Halal animal derivatives must be substituted. Recognised halal certifying bodies include: ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization), IFANCA, and JAKIM (Malaysia — widely accepted in UAE).

  • General Medical Company (GMC): Healthcare and pharmaceutical distribution specialist.
  • International Health Products (IHP): Supplement and nutraceutical specialist distributor.

Key retail channels in the UAE

  • Aster Pharmacy / Life Pharmacy / Boots (UAE): The dominant pharmacy chains where supplements are primarily sold.
  • Carrefour UAE: Major hypermarket with growing health supplement section.
  • Spinneys: Premium supermarket chain. Good for premium supplement brands.
  • GNC UAE: Supplement specialty retail with strong brand presence.
  • Amazon.ae: Growing e-commerce channel — MOHAP registration still required for listed supplements.

Using UAE as a GCC gateway

MOHAP registration in the UAE significantly eases registration in other GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman). While each country has its own regulatory body, product dossiers prepared for UAE registration can be adapted for GCC submissions. Saudi Arabia (SFDA registration) is the largest GCC market but the most complex — a UAE launch first, then Saudi expansion, is the most efficient sequencing.
