Selling Supplements on Amazon Italy

Italy is a large and fast-growing supplement market — Italians spend more on food supplements per capita than most other Europeans. Amazon.it is growing its share of supplement sales but Italian pharmacies remain dominant. Brands that get Ministry of Health notification done and build strong Italian-language listings have a significant first-mover advantage.

Italian Ministry of Health notification

All food supplements sold in Italy must be notified to the Italian Ministry of Health via the online portal at supplementiitalia.it. Notification requires: complete formulation, label artwork in Italian, and evidence that all ingredients are permitted under Italian and EU regulations. Italy has its own national ingredient lists for botanicals that extend beyond EU harmonised rules. Notification typically takes 30–90 days.

Italian label requirements

Labels must be in Italian. Required elements mirror EU requirements plus Italy-specific additions: the Ministry of Health notification number must appear on the label once issued. The warning 'Non superare la dose giornaliera consigliata' (Do not exceed the recommended daily dose) must appear. Products with melatonin have specific dosing and warning requirements under Italian law.

Italian-specific ingredient restrictions

Italy has a stricter botanical ingredient framework than most EU countries. The Ministry of Health publishes lists of permitted botanicals, their permitted parts, and maximum doses. Many herbal extracts common in US supplements are not on Italy's permitted list — check before formulating. Italy also has specific rules on melatonin dose limits (1mg per dose) that are stricter than Italian consumers might expect given international products.

Competing on Amazon.it

Amazon.it supplement competition is notably lower than Amazon.de or Amazon UK. Many international brands have not done Italian notification and therefore cannot legitimately compete. Italian consumers trust brands with Italian-language content, Italian-flag imagery, and natural/clean ingredient stories. Sports nutrition categories are growing fast driven by Italian gym culture.
