Selling Supplements on Amazon Netherlands (Amazon.nl)

Amazon Netherlands (Amazon.nl) launched in 2020 and has grown rapidly, capturing significant e-commerce market share from Dutch-dominant platforms like bol.com. The Dutch supplement market is health-conscious and digitally sophisticated — and supplement brands that get their Amazon.nl presence right have a gateway to Belgian and wider Benelux customers.

Dutch supplement regulation: NVWA oversight

Supplements in the Netherlands are regulated as food under EU and national food law. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) enforces compliance. Key Netherlands-specific points: no mandatory pre-notification system for supplements (unlike France and Italy), but the NVWA actively monitors the market and can order product withdrawal. Ingredient claims must comply with EU Regulation 1924/2006 — Dutch enforcement of health claims violations is active, including against Amazon listings.

Dutch labelling requirements

Dutch labels must be in Dutch. English-only labels are not legally compliant for the Dutch market. Required elements (as per EU FIC Regulation 1169/2011 and Netherlands-specific NHP rules): product name, net quantity, ingredient list, allergen declarations, 'best before' date, storage conditions, serving size and daily recommended dose, warning 'Aanbevolen dagelijkse hoeveelheid niet overschrijden' (Do not exceed recommended daily amount). Name and address of an EU-established food business operator.

Amazon.nl setup for supplement sellers

Amazon.nl is part of the Amazon European marketplaces — if you already sell on Amazon.de, you can expand to Amazon.nl using your existing seller account. Key steps: (1) Create Dutch-language listings (not just English). (2) Translate product titles, bullet points, descriptions, and A+ Content into Dutch. (3) Ensure packaging label is Dutch-compliant before listing — Amazon.nl can receive complaints from NVWA-alerted sellers. (4) FBA in the Netherlands: Amazon has Dutch FBA facilities. Using Dutch FBA avoids cross-border shipping fees within the Netherlands.

Netherlands VAT for supplement sellers

Netherlands VAT rate on food supplements (as food): 9% (reduced rate). On vitamins in pill/tablet form that might be classified differently: potentially 21% (standard rate). The exact classification depends on product form and how Dutch tax authorities classify it. Register for Dutch VAT if you store inventory in Dutch FBA facilities. If selling cross-border from German FBA, use OSS from your German VAT registration once sales exceed €10,000 cross-border threshold.

Bol.com: the Dutch supplement marketplace

Don't overlook bol.com — the dominant Dutch e-commerce marketplace with more market share than Amazon.nl in the Netherlands. Bol.com has a large supplement and health category. It operates a marketplace model (you can sell as a 'partner') and also does direct retail buying. Many supplement brands generate more Dutch revenue through bol.com than Amazon.nl. A Netherlands market strategy should include both platforms. Bol.com logistics (LVB — Logistiek via bol.com) functions similarly to Amazon FBA.
