How to Sell Supplements in Ecuador

Ecuador is a practical dollar-denominated entry market for health and wellness brands, but imported supplements cannot simply be shipped in and listed online. Product classification, ARCSA sanitary requirements, Spanish labelling, importer details, and SENAE customs planning should be resolved before inventory moves.

Start with ARCSA product classification

ARCSA is Ecuador's health surveillance authority. Determine whether the SKU is treated as a food supplement, food for special dietary use, cosmetic, or another regulated product before finalising claims or packaging. The applicable sanitary notification or registration, technical file, responsible party, and supporting documents depend on that classification. Confirm the current pathway directly with ARCSA or a qualified Ecuadorian regulatory adviser; do not assume a US or EU classification transfers unchanged.

Spanish label and nutrition requirements

Consumer-facing information should be in Spanish and include the product identity, ingredients, net content, lot, manufacture and expiry dates, storage instructions, country of origin, and the Ecuadorian importer or responsible party with its RUC where required. Packaged foods may need Ecuador's front-of-pack traffic-light nutrition label under the applicable INEN and ARCSA rules. Review the final artwork against the current product classification before printing.

Claims, ingredients, and evidence

Keep structure/function and health claims conservative until they have been checked against Ecuadorian rules. Performance, weight-management, disease, and therapeutic claims can change regulatory treatment or create advertising risk. Verify novel ingredients, stimulants, botanicals, dosage limits, allergens, and analytical testing requirements with ARCSA before submitting a technical file.

Import, tax, and landed-cost planning

Work with an Ecuadorian importer of record and a licensed SENAE customs broker. Model HS-code duty, IVA, FODINFA, brokerage, port or airport handling, insurance, and inland delivery separately. DDP can simplify the buyer experience but should only be used when the importer and tax responsibilities are contractually clear. Quito and Guayaquil are the primary launch and logistics hubs, with different inland delivery economics.

Channels worth validating first

Directional channels to investigate include Fybeca and SanaSana for pharmacy reach, Supermaxi and Megamaxi for modern grocery, De Prati for premium retail, and MercadoLibre Ecuador plus local delivery platforms for online testing. These are research leads rather than endorsements or guarantees of current buyer access. Validate supplier onboarding, category fit, margins, returns, and fulfilment terms directly with each channel.

A lower-risk launch sequence

  1. Classify the SKU and audit claims with an Ecuadorian regulatory adviser.
  2. Prepare Spanish artwork and confirm importer/RUC details.
  3. Obtain the required ARCSA notification or registration before commercial import.
  4. Use a small Quito and Guayaquil marketplace or pharmacy test with tracked sell-through.
  5. Only then scale inventory, grocery ranging, and creator or paid-media activity.

Regulatory requirements, taxes, retailer programmes, and provider availability can change. Verify current details before making a commercial or legal commitment.
