Selling Supplements in Poland: SANEPID Notification Guide

Poland is Central and Eastern Europe's largest supplement market, and one of Europe's fastest growing. A growing health-conscious middle class, strong adoption of sports nutrition, and rising e-commerce penetration make Poland a compelling target for supplement brands. The regulatory framework requires notification to Polish sanitary authorities before sale.

GIS notification: the Polish regulatory requirement

In Poland, food supplements must be notified to the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (Główny Inspektorat Sanitarny, GIS) before being first placed on the Polish market. Notification is submitted via the GIS online system and includes: product name, ingredient list and quantities, proposed label, and details of the Polish-established food business operator. If your product contains a botanical ingredient, ensure it appears on the GIS list of permitted botanical ingredients (Lista roślin GIS).

Polish labelling requirements

Labels must be in Polish. Required elements (under EU FIC Regulation and Polish implementing legislation): product name, net quantity, ingredient list with allergens highlighted, best before date, storage conditions, recommended daily dose, 'Nie przekraczać zalecanej porcji do spożycia w ciągu dnia' (Do not exceed the recommended daily portion), 'Nie stosować jako substytutu zróżnicowanej diety' (Not to be used as a substitute for a varied diet), name and address of Polish-established FBO or EU importer.

Polish retail channels for supplements

  • Rossmann Poland: Over 1,500 stores — the dominant health and beauty chain. Strong supplement section. Private label and international brands both strong.
  • Hebe (Jeronimo Martins): Growing health and beauty chain. Strong supplement category.
  • Doz.pl and Gemini Apteki: Leading pharmacy chains. Over-the-counter supplement channel.
  • Allegro: Poland's dominant e-commerce marketplace. Often more important than Amazon (Amazon.pl launched 2021 but Allegro remains dominant).
  • Decathlon Poland: Major sports nutrition retail channel.
  • Biedronka / Lidl: Discounters with growing health food and supplement sections.

Sports nutrition in Poland

Poland has a particularly strong sports nutrition market, with gym membership among the highest per capita in Europe. Polish consumers are sophisticated buyers — they know the brands, understand ingredient profiles, and are price-sensitive in commodity categories but willing to pay premium for authentic specialist brands. Key sports nutrition retailers include: Olimp Sport Nutrition (dominant local brand also acting as distributor), Decathlon, and specialist online stores like Suple.pl and Muscle-Zone.pl.

Distribution into Poland

The Polish distribution landscape for supplements includes several national distributors covering both pharmacy and retail channels. Companies like NEUCA, Pelion, and PGF (Phoenix Group) are major pharmaceutical distributors that also carry supplements. For mass retail (Rossmann, supermarkets), distributors like Maspex Wadowice and various FMCG distributors are relevant. For sports nutrition, specialist distributors serve the gym and online channels.
