Selling Supplements in Saudi Arabia: SFDA Guide

Saudi Arabia is the largest supplement market in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. High disposable income, a young and fitness-conscious population, and government health initiatives drive demand. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) oversees a comprehensive product registration system that is more demanding than most other markets in the region.

SFDA product registration: the market entry gate

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) requires all food supplements to be registered before they can be legally sold in Saudi Arabia. Registration is submitted through SFDA's e-services portal. Required documentation: Certificate of Free Sale (CFS) from the country of origin, authenticated by the Saudi embassy or via apostille, product specification and full formulation, manufacturing GMP certificate, complete product label (Arabic), and Certificate of Analysis for each production batch. Registration fees vary; processing time is typically 3–9 months.

Halal certification for Saudi Arabia

Halal certification is essential for all supplement products sold in Saudi Arabia — it is both legally required for food imports and commercially critical. Accepted certifying bodies include those recognised by the Saudi Halal Centre and ESMA. Common formulation issues: gelatin capsule shells (must be bovine halal or vegetable cellulose), flavouring agents (alcohol-based flavours not permitted), and ingredients derived from porcine sources (absolutely prohibited). Reformulation is often required for products designed for Western markets.

Arabic labelling requirements

All product labels sold in Saudi Arabia must include Arabic text as the primary language (English may be included alongside). Required elements: product name in Arabic, full ingredient list in Arabic (INCI names for cosmetics; standard food ingredient names for supplements), net quantity, manufacturing and expiry dates, storage conditions, serving size and recommended daily dose, name and address of Saudi importer, and SFDA registration number once obtained.

Key Saudi retail channels for supplements

  • Al-Nahdi Medical Company: Saudi Arabia's largest pharmacy chain with over 2,500 branches. Primary supplement retail channel.
  • Nahdi Online / NAHL: Online arm of Al-Nahdi. Significant e-commerce for supplements.
  • United Pharmacies (UP): Second-largest pharmacy chain.
  • Panda / Carrefour Saudi: Major hypermarkets with supplement sections.
  • Extra (electronics/lifestyle): Growing health supplement section.
  • Sephora / Beauty-focused retailers: For skincare supplement crossovers.
  • Amazon.sa: Growing marketplace; SFDA registration number required on listings.

The GCC expansion opportunity from Saudi Arabia

SFDA registration in Saudi Arabia, while demanding, provides the strongest foundation for GCC expansion. Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have ongoing regulatory harmonisation through the Gulf Standards Organization (GSO). Products registered with SFDA often face simplified registration in UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman. Saudi Arabia should be treated as the primary GCC market that unlocks the wider regional opportunity.
